About

Tereza Barnard (b. 1984) is a Czech-born oil painter whose work delves into the psychological depths of her subjects. Her academic journey includes a Foundation Degree in Graphic Design from the University of the Arts London, a BSc in Psychology from Westminster University, and an MSc in Developmental Psychology from University College London. This multidisciplinary background enriches her nuanced portrayal of human emotions and societal themes.

Barnard's oil paintings captivate viewers with opulent ruffles, regal tiaras, and sequins, inviting an initial allure. A deeper engagement reveals intricate narratives, informed by her formal training in psychology, that explore the interplay between societal expectations, mother-child relationships, and individual identity. Employing meticulous brushwork, she constructs realistic figures adorned in opulent attire, with gestural strokes that verge on abstraction, creating a dynamic tension between realism and expressionism.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the LA Art Show with Arcadia Contemporary Gallery in 2023 and at Oxo Gallery London as part of the British Art Prize Finalists 23 Exhibition. Barnard's paintings are held in collections worldwide, including in New Zealand and the United States. She has been a finalist in prestigious competitions such as the ARC 15th and 16th Salon, ModPortrait, and Figurativas, with her artwork 'Comparisons' receiving 'Highly Commended' at the British Art Prize 2023, announced in 2024.

Her work has been featured in esteemed publications such as Create! Magazine and Artists & Illustrators, underscoring her impact on contemporary realist art.

Barnard reflects, 'An indulgent world of ruffles becomes cloying; it's the hidden narratives behind the facade that intrigue me, prompting a deeper exploration of identity and societal constructs.'
